movers in kenya

Most people planning to move into a Kileleshwa apartment worry about the distance. It is usually the wrong worry. Whether you are coming from Kilimani or Kisumu, the part of the day that goes wrong is the last stretch: the gate, the basement ramp, the lift and the corridor to your door. Settle four things with building management before you book movers, and most of the risk goes away. You need to know which lift you can use and when, where the lorry can stop, which hours moving is allowed, and what sign-off or deposit the building needs.

This matters more in Kileleshwa than in most of Nairobi because the estate has changed so quickly. Apartment blocks of five or six floors began appearing in the 1990s. In the last decade, towers of 15 and even 20 storeys have gone up where bungalows once stood, according to the Daily Nation. The roads have not changed much. In a survey by the Kileleshwa Ward Neighbourhood Association, reported in May 2026, 95% of respondents said traffic had become much worse over the past ten years. More people now move in and out of taller buildings, along roads that were built for bungalows.

A 1990s walk-up and a new tower are two different moves

Kileleshwa has both, often on the same road. Before anything else, work out which kind of building you are moving into, and which kind you are leaving.

Older block (five or six floors) Newer tower (10 floors or more)
Lift Often none, or one small passenger lift One or more lifts, sometimes a service lift
Where the lorry stops Inside the compound or on the road outside On the road, in a loading bay, or in the basement if it fits
Who sets the rules Landlord or caretaker A management company, often with written move-in rules
Main risk on the day Long stair carries and tight landings Lift slots, fixed hours and damage deposits
Ask first Which floor, and how narrow the stairs are Lift booking, basement height and permitted hours

Neither is easier. A walk-up needs more hands and more time. A tower needs more paperwork and tighter timing. Your quote should reflect the building you have at both ends of the move.

Follow the sofa from the kerb to your door

The simplest way to plan an apartment move is to picture your largest item, usually the sofa, a wardrobe or the fridge, and trace its route from the lorry to the room where it will stand. Every point where it could get stuck is something to confirm before moving day.

Where the lorry stops

Many basement ramps in new blocks were designed for cars, so do not assume a moving lorry will fit. Ask management for the basement clearance height, then ask your mover how tall the lorry they plan to send is. If it will not fit, agree where it will park instead and how far the crew will have to carry from there. A long carry adds time, and time is part of the price.

If the lorry has to wait on the road, bear in mind that many Kileleshwa side roads are narrow and busy, and building sites take up space along several of them. Ask the guard or caretaker whether the lorry may stand in front of the gate, and for how long. An early start helps. Our crews usually begin between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning, before the roads fill up.

The gate

Most compounds with security will ask for a gate pass or a list of names. Give management the moving company’s name, the lorry’s registration number and the date. Tell your mover about the gate rules when you book. We arrange gate passes and security requirements when we know about them in advance, which is far easier than negotiating at the gate with a loaded lorry waiting.

The lift

The lift is where most apartment moves are won or lost. Four questions settle it:

Ask too whether the building provides lift protection pads or expects the mover to bring them. Some managers inspect the lift before and after a move. Be there for both inspections, and take photos.

Corridors and your front door

The tight turn between the lift and your door catches out more furniture than the lift itself. Beds, wardrobes and large tables usually need to come apart. Our crews dismantle and reassemble them, keep the bolts in labelled bags, lay floor runners along the walking route and pad the doorways. If you would like the fragile things packed for you as well, our packing service covers glassware, crockery and electronics.

No lift, or a lift that is out of service

In a walk-up, or when the lift is down, everything goes up by hand. Before the move, the team looks at the staircase and the largest items, then decides on the crew size and the equipment needed. Stair carries take longer, and moves with several flights of stairs can cost more. So tell your mover the real floor number when you ask for a quote. A price based on the ground floor will not survive a sixth-floor stairwell.

Timing an apartment move in Kileleshwa

Three calendars matter: the building’s, the city’s and the weather’s.

The building. Management sets its own moving hours. Some buildings do not allow moves on Sundays or after dark. Check the rules before you choose a date, not after.

The city. The end of the month, the first days of a new month, weekends and December are the busiest times for movers in Nairobi. They are also when lifts are most likely to be double-booked, because other tenants are moving too. A weekday in the middle of the month is usually easier on both counts.

The weather. The Kenya Meteorological Department expects enhanced rains from October, linked to El Niño. If your move falls in the rains, ask where the lorry can load under cover, whether the lobby floor can be protected, and whether the date can change if the weather turns. Wrapping protects furniture in light rain, but a long carry across an open car park in a downpour is worth avoiding.

What to send your building manager

Send these questions a week or two before the move and ask for the answers in writing. Send the same list to the building you are leaving.

  1. Which lift can we use, and can you reserve it for [date] from [time] to [time]?
  2. What is the basement clearance height, and where should a moving lorry park if it cannot enter?
  3. What are the permitted moving hours and days?
  4. What do you need for the gate pass: company name, crew names or vehicle registration?
  5. Is there a move-in deposit, a lift protection requirement, or an inspection before and after?
  6. Does the generator run the lift during a power cut?
  7. Is anyone else moving in or out on the same day?

Keep the replies. If there is a disagreement later about a scratched lift or a damage deposit, a written agreement carries far more weight than a phone call with the caretaker.

Turning the answers into a quote

Once you have the answers, share them with your mover along with photos of the lift, the stairs and your largest items. That is enough for an accurate quote without guesswork. We carry out surveys in person or by video call, and our office is at Haven Cottage on Othaya Road, in Kileleshwa itself.

If your new flat will not be ready on the day you must leave the old one, we can hold your belongings in short-term storage in Nairobi and deliver them when you get the keys. Moving from next door? Kilimani has gone through the same shift to tower blocks, so the same questions apply there.

When your building has answered, see how our movers in Kileleshwa handle apartment moves, or send us your move details for a fixed quote.
